What launch keeps

What the station keeps about you, who sees it, how long it stays, and who to ask to delete it.

What it keeps

Your student ID and your name from your period’s roster, which your Division Chief loads. On screens you are your first name and last initial. Your PIN is kept only as a scrambled hash.

Your crew’s mission: every press, every choice, and everything your crew writes in the game, such as goals, reasons and the directives you write for the base’s mind.

Where you are in the mission, which letters you have read, and words you were still typing, so the game is the same on any computer you sign in on. Nothing else is saved in your browser; a cookie keeps you signed in until you sign out or sit idle too long.

If your Division Chief sets your console to its guided cards, that setting, and how much help each choice you made on the cards took. Only your Division Chief sees it, at the Mission Control desk, and it is deleted with your period’s mission.

When you sign in and out, so the person who runs launch for the academy can see that the station is working.

launch does not ask for your email, your phone number or where you are, it shows no ads, and it never records your voice.

Who sees it

Your crew sees your first name and last initial and your crew’s work. Your Division Chief sees every student’s name and work at the Mission Control desk. The board shown to the room has crews and their progress, never a name. The person who runs launch for the academy can see it too, to keep the station working.

Asking H.A.L.

H.A.L. answers from the script. When the script has no answer and the person who runs launch has switched it on, your question goes to Claude, an AI model made by Anthropic, with your crew’s game and never your name. Your question and the reply are not kept on the station.

One exception: if a question sounds like you might be in danger, it goes to an adult at the academy with your name, so a person can check on you.

How long it is kept

Your name, your crew’s mission and everything your crew wrote are deleted on their own at the end of the school year, in the June 30 cleanup after your period’s last mission day. Your Division Chief can delete them sooner.

Your mission record, what your crew chose in Mission Alpha with crewmates named by student ID and never by name, is kept so it can carry into the next mission. It stays while you are on the academy’s student list, and is erased when you leave it or when anyone asks.

A backup copy of launch is kept off the site for at most 30 days, so anything deleted is gone from every copy within 30 days.

Asking for it to be deleted

Ask your Division Chief. They can delete your period’s mission or your mission record right away. If you would rather not ask them, ask the person who runs launch for the academy, who can take you off the student list and everything launch keeps about you with it.
